Indifference is a very immoral phenomenon that gives rise to various vices. Often it leads to tragedies when human lives break down, dreams fall apart. M. Gorky said that indifference is dangerous to the human soul. I agree with him, because it deprives us of interest in life and people. This idea is confirmed by many works of Russian literature.
In Gorky himself, in the play “At the Bottom”, a marginal society is shown in which indifference and indifference to the fate of one's neighbor reigns. The heroes gathered in a rooming house, although they live under the same roof, remain indifferent to each other's troubles. These people are cruel, many of them have already begun to lose that human, without which it is impossible to live. They do not know how to sympathize: the dying Anna does not cause their pity, she only interferes with her cough. A drunken Actor “runs into” the conviction of Bubnov, because he still believes in his cure, in theatrical talent, which, perhaps, still lives in him, although in memory there is not a single full-fledged role. The bedsiders also laugh unkindly at the romantic Nastya, who dreams of love and composes stories based on read romance novels. On the whole, the heroes of Gorky are deaf to the feelings of others, and this indifference destroys them as people, turning them into indifferent beings who are destined to spend their entire meager lives in this place described by the author, forgotten by God.
Although not with such force, but still shown the destructive power of indifference in the novel by M.Yu. Lermontov "Hero of our time." A toy for the protagonist Grigory Pechorin becomes Bela - a girl stolen from her home. The hero is fond of her, keeps her at home. Bela suffers very much from this, and Pechorin, with the exception of rare moments, remains indifferent to her misfortune. He is shown by an egoist who is confident in his innocence and does not even think about what his actions mean to others. Circumstances are such that Bela dies in pursuit of the hands of Kazbich: Pechorin is also indirectly guilty of this. Only after this the hero seems to repent of what he did, but this can not change anything. "Savage Love", in his opinion, is no different from the love of a secular young lady. Gregory talks about women as things, and such indifference destroys his soul. In this he admits to his many monologues from The Diary.
Indifference can make a person’s life and his loved ones unbearable; it really destroys souls. Perhaps, it is he who needs to be defeated first of all, and then humanity will again recall the true morality, which is so lacking today.
