He managed to beat the old woman with a palette, which, subsequently, turned into a beautiful young girl. The killer came back to Kiev. There, the rector lurks him and sends him to perform funeral rites of the daughter of a wealthy gentleman. She half-delirium announced the last will - that it was Brutus who led her to the next world. Dozens of good fellows came to Kiev for a guy so that he wouldn’t rush off along the road. When they arrived, the father asks Homa about his acquaintance with his deceased and previously battered daughter. The philosopher learns the terrible news: that witch, to whom the Bursaks came to spend the night, is the very dying panel.
Homa was locked up in a church near the coffin of the late centurion's daughter. After reading the prayer, the philosopher is confronted with the supernatural - the little panel rises from the tomb. The same thing is repeated on the second night, but the hero’s strength is running out: in an unequal battle, he turns gray and loses his vitality. As soon as the philosopher looked into the eyes of real evil, his soul left the body. Misfortunes have taken over the church. Khoma’s funeral was held in Kiev, friends commemorated him.
