(392 words) The story begins with a vivid description of the atmosphere on Nevsky Prospekt: clean sidewalks, the fragrant smell of freshly baked bread and a lot of people hurrying about their business. According to the author, this place is the real heart of St. Petersburg. Before lunch, workers and employees are running along the avenue. During lunch on Nevsky a large number of important people and ladies in charming shoes. After three in the afternoon, officials walk on the sidewalk, and after an hour everything subsides ... Only in the dark the Nevsky Prospect is filled with young people.
It was at this time that Pirogov appeared before us, he is also a lieutenant, and with it the artist Piskaryov. Walking along the avenue, the characters meet two young girls, who immediately fall in love. At this point, the heroes disperse and follow their chosen ones.
Piskaryov decided to follow the charming brunette. Because of his timidity, the hero was embarrassed to approach the girl and was very glad when she herself beckoned him. Caught in a dusty and dirty four-story building, the young artist saw three more girls and several men. Piskaryov immediately realized that he was in a brothel. Only after standing for a minute, he rushed to run towards his house. The hero regains consciousness for a long time, however, having calmed down, he falls asleep. Piskaryov had a dream with that same brunette, and from that moment only she occupied his thoughts. The artist turned into a sleepwalker, noticing anything in his path. However, this does not last long. Piskaryov goes to his friend for opium, which is able to return the hero to his former life. After its adoption, the man again goes to the same brothel to convey to the brunette all the sinfulness of her lifestyle. But the girl only laughs at the young man. Unable to cope with his grief, Piskaryov ends his life with suicide - he cuts his throat with a razor. However, his friend Pirogov did not attend the funeral, as he had good reason for that.
As far as we remember, the young lieutenant also liked the girl, and he followed her. Unlike Piskaryov, Pirogov was nevertheless able to start a conversation with the blonde, but she answered coldly and restrained. Just reaching the German house by the name of Schiller, the hero realizes that the young girl is his wife. Pirogov decides to come to her the other day when her husband is not at home. However, the whole idyll is spoiled by the early returning Schiller, who drives the lieutenant away. In desperation, Pirogov eats up, gets drunk with his friends and forever forgets the story of the beautiful blonde.
At the very end of this story, the author advises us to always remember that the events that occurred on Nevsky Prospect are just a dream and a hoax.
