A storybook tells about the events of 1916-1917. and early 1918, when Mikhail Afanasevich himself, as a young specialist, was sent to Nikolskoye. The plot is as follows: Bulgakov describes a young doctor who recently graduated from a university who comes to a remote Russian village and for the first time is faced with the need to single-handedly identify diseases, prescribe the right treatment and carry out the most complicated operations, which he often did not even see live. The main events of the book are taken from the life of the author. We described them in detail in a brief retelling.
Towel with a cock
September 17, 1917 the hero arrives at the Murinsky hospital, almost stiffened on the road. His guard Yegorych meets him. Many wonder how young the new doctor is.
Warming up in the kitchen, the hero gets acquainted with the staff - feldsher Demyan Lukich, midwives Pelageya Ivanovna and Anna Nikolaevna. In the hospital, he sees a huge library and tools left over from his predecessor Leopold Leopoldovich. In the evening, the hero alone thinks about what to do if he has to heal something that he does not know. Afraid of almost everything. At night they bring a girl who fell into the flax thresher. She dies, but the doctor still carries out amputation of the leg. After two and a half months, the patient and her father come to him and gratefully give a towel with an embroidered cock.
Steel throat
November. The hero is again afraid of cases of childbirth or hernia. At this moment, a three-year-old girl is brought in with launched diphtheria croup. Mother and grandmother did not want to treat her and ask for drops. The case is hopeless, but the doctor persuades the mother to the operation, although he does not understand why, and is afraid of her consent.
In the end, they leave, but after a while the mother agrees. During the operation, the paramedic faints, but everything goes well. After months, Lidka only had scars on her throat, and in the villages they only say that the new doctor made her a steel throat.
Baptism by turn
The hero reads the anatomical atlas and falls asleep. Aksinya, the nurse, wakes him up. A woman has a dysfunctional birth - a transverse position. The doctor conducts an external and internal examination and decides to conduct a turn on the leg.
Having said that he is going for cigarettes, he runs home and looks at a guide to obstetrics. How he performs an operation in a dream, and when he returns home, he understands everything better than described in the book.
Winter storm
During a blizzard, the hero rests and takes a bath. But they sent for him, because after the engagement in the village, the groom rolled the bride, and the sled skidded, hitting the jamb.
Upon arrival, he finds the girl’s death and is going back. On the way, they get lost in a snowstorm and stray for four hours. As a result, they go to the hospital, barely fighting off the wolves.
Star dust
The hero identifies syphilis in a man, but he only complains about the throat and does not listen to the recommendation that he should be treated. After receiving treatment, he disappears. At the same time, he could infect a woman who, having learned all this, is panicky afraid of getting sick.
But, having gone through all the prevention, she becomes healthy. All others do not consider syphilis a disease and are treated only in the later stages. As a result, the doctor seeks to open a department for syphilitics.
Egyptian darkness
Hero's birthday. The entire staff notes and tells curious cases of how rural, misunderstanding the treatment, find themselves in anecdotal situations.
After the miller comes, striking the doctor with his lack of understanding. As a result, he is put in a department and prescribed to drink ten powders, which he eats all at once. The doctor decides to deal with this illiteracy in the future.
Missing eye
Morning after the birthday of the hero. He is sure that he went through everything and can cure everything, remembering the past.
But then a woman with a child comes to him, whose eye has disappeared and is all yellow. The doctor does not know what it is, and offers to cut, because there is no eye. Mother says the eye has been and is leaving. A week later, he sees a healthy child and realizes that it was just a huge abscess. The doctor does not promise more.
