Donja Juan in a man's suit - green pants and a camisole - arrives from his native Valladolid in Madrid. Quintana, her old faithful servant, accompanies her. He asks Madam why she left her father's house and travels in masculine guise. Juana says that on Easter, in April, she went out for a walk and met a beautiful stranger whom she fell in love with at first sight. She could not sleep at night, and, opening the door to the balcony, she saw a handsome man below. Don Martin de Guzmán sang serenades at night, sent letters and gifts during the day. In less than two months, Juan surrendered. But when Martin Don’s father Andres found out about their love, a terrible scandal erupted. Juan comes from a noble but impoverished family, and the old man appreciates only gold. He wants to marry his son to Ines, the daughter of his friend Don Pedro, but is afraid that Juan will sue the seducer and the oath-breaker. Therefore, Andres decided to send Martin to Madrid under a false name. He wrote to Pedro that his son had tied himself with Juana, but he found for Ines a suitable bridegroom - Don Gil de Albornos, who is not only good-born and rich, but also young and handsome. Martin dutifully went to Madrid under the name of Don Gil. Having learned about this, Juana follows him. So that Martin does not recognize her, she sends Kintan to Vallecas, promising to send him a letter, and hires herself a new servant - Karamanchel. Karamanchel changed many owners: he served with a doctor who prescribed the same medicines to everyone, a corrupt lawyer, a glutton-priest. Karamanchel is surprised at the unmanly appearance of his new master and says that he looks like a castrate. Juana calls himself Don Gil.
Martin comes to Pedro and hands him a letter from Andres, where he praises Don Gil in every way. Martin says that he wants to get married with Ines as soon as possible because his father chose another bride: if the father finds out about his son’s desire to marry Ines, he will deprive him of his inheritance, Pedro is ready to hurry up with the wedding: he fully trusts Andres and will not waste time on verification of information about the groom. Pedro promises to speak with his daughter today. He will not yet give her the name of the groom, and that evening in the Ducal Garden, she furtively declares her love. Martin is delighted with his own tricks.
Juan, in love with Ines, begs her not to go to the Ducal Garden: he is tormented by a bad foreboding. But Ines already promised her cousin to go there with her. Ines assures Juan of his love and invites him to come to the garden too.
Pedro talks to Ines about the bridegroom, claiming that Juan is not suitable for him. Ines is unhappy that she has been handed a husband to a man whom she did not even see. Upon learning that the groom’s name is Don Gil, she exclaims: “Don Gil? God have mercy! / What is the name! Juan reminds Ines of his disappeared lover, and Ines trusts her with all his sorrows - in this way, Juana knows Martin's every move. Juana is afraid that Martin would not suspect that Gil is not Gil at all, but disguised as Juan. She sends Kintan to Martin with the news that after his departure, Juan, who bears the fruit of his love beneath her heart, retired to the monastery and there she shed tears day and night. If Martin does not return to her, she would prefer death to dishonor. Juana is sure that, having received such a letter, Martin will believe in the existence of don Gil.

Don Gil in the mantilla! / I’m kind of sober and not delirious ... / Both have a place for them in hell - / And to Khil this and Hiliy! ” Elvira promises Karamanchel that in an hour he will see her and his master together.
