: The Old Magician predicts to the Prophetic Oleg that he will die from his horse. Oleg is trying to avoid this, but the prophecy still comes true.
Oleg is going on a military campaign to avenge the Khazars for raids. A magus comes out of the forest towards him. Oleg drives up to him and asks to make a prediction. The elder predicts glorious victories to him, “a shield on the gates of Constantinople” and death from a horse, whom Oleg loves very much. Oleg believes in prediction and says goodbye to the horse, ordering to take good care of him:
Cover with a blanket, shaggy carpet,
Take me into the meadow under the bridle;
Bathe, feed with selected grain,
Water with a spring water.
Having returned from the campaign, Oleg wants to visit his old fighting friend-horse, but finds out about his death. Frustrated, he curses the wizard and goes to the horse remains. Saying goodbye, Oleg steps on the horse’s skull, from which a snake will crawl out and sting the prince.
From the dead chapter of the grave serpent,
Hissing, meanwhile crawled out;
Like a black ribbon wrapped around my legs
And the prince suddenly cried out.
The prediction comes true - Prophetic Oleg dies of poison.
